Recently I began to learn the script characteristics of the Law Codex of Vindol, because I wanted to use it for some calligraphic works. We could look up to the ancient writers how they used the Glagolitic script, formed it and finally transfered it into a modern form, compared to the primal rounded Glagolitsa which was very difficult to write.
Generals about the font “Vinodolski Zakon”
At last I decided to create a font based on the script characteristics of the Law Codex of Vinodol. The letters are slightly modified to achieve a homogeneous type face. For the capital letters I used the common known forms, because the Law Codex of Vinodol is mostly written with small letters. The handful of capital letters were not enough to be an example for the capital letters. The capital letters were fitted to the characteristics of the small letters, to achieve a harmonious optical impression. The font contains a lots of ligatures, furthermore it contains some letter combinations as opentype features to reproduce a correct glagolitic spelling. These automatic caused changings works only since Microsoft Office version 2010. Older MS office versions do not provide ligature features, but you can insert all ligatures manually in the text. The font “Vinodolski Zakon” uses the Unicode tables for Latin letters as well as for Glagolitic letters. The block for Unicode Latin is occupied with Glagolitic characters, to enable a direct conversion from Latin into Glagolitic.
New Glagolitic graphemes in the font
In October 2011 an arrangement was made, that for the Latin letters Q,W and X new Glagolitic letters have to be created, to eliminate the difficulties with the transfer of a Latin text into Glagolitic. These new graphemes are also included in the font “Vinodolski Zakon”.
Nenad Hancic (Glagolitica Fonts&Co) specializes in Glagolitic. He created two fonts, Croatica (2009), and Glagolica Missal DPG. The lower case letters of Glagolica Missal DPG are based on Missal from 1483, while the capital letters are based on those of Transit of St. Jerome from 1508. Nenad lives in Duesseldorf, Germany.
