Buki Free
BUKI is a name inspired by the Bulgarian „Аз, Буки, Веди“ as well as the similar sound to the word “Book”. BUKI Typeface started as a MA project at NAA in 2017. BUKI is a font family of seven styles, created for the purpose of children’s reading in children’s books and textbooks with the main focus on Bulgarian publishing. The font has a friendly and straightforward feeling. Although the targeted group is children between the ages of 8 and 12, BUKI could be suitable for adults.
The characteristics of BUKI are low contrast between thick and thin strokes, bolder upper serifs for easier decoding while reading, legible letter shapes with open counters. Its spacing is balanced and a bit wider, but was tested in layout example of a primary textbook and does not exceed the volume of such edition. The font can be used both for longer text and shorter texts, as well as headlines. The details are designed to be suitable for bigger sizes such as 16, 18, 24 pt, or more, but also for smaller such as 13 pt and 9 pt. It has balanced ascenders and descenders towards the x-height. Its organic structure is based on Garalde and Old Style typefaces which are considered best for reading in print. BUKI keeps the calligraphic construction of a broad nib pen but with a modern approach.
This is the first version of the BUKI font family. An extended and improved one could be created in the future.
